Scotland won only one game in the 2014 Six Nations—against Italy—and finished their campaign with a humiliating 51-3 defeat to Wales.With Cotter finally at the reins after seeing out his previous contract with Clermont, Scotland can begin to rebuild their side and their mentality.The U.S. game was a good start, but after longer with the squad, Cotter can stamp his authority ahead of the Canada encounter.

The Toronto matchup is a must-win to breed early confidence in a new era for Scottish rugby after some often poor performances in recent years.Certainly second-row Richie Gray reckons Cotter's influence is already showing in the camp, per Alasdair Lamont on BBC Sport:

Last week was his first time with the guys, so he wasn't giving too much, just a bit of direction. This week, it has been more hands-on, especially with the forwards, so we are being moulded in the way he wants to train and play.
He was pleased with some areas of the game at the weekend, as a team we were happy with the scrum and the defence; being able to shut out the opposition - no tries. But we still have to make improvements at line-out time and bring more physicality to our game. That's been a big focus this week.

In the forwards, Scotland must look to dominate against Canada, and they must cut out the handling errors that saw them fall short of really thrashing the U.S. last time out.

The conditions in Toronto will be much more forgiving than they were in Texas and should allow Scotland to sustain their stamina for longer.

Scotland moved up two places in the world rankings after their U.S. victory, per the International Rugby Board, they are now eighth compared to the 16th-placed Canadians.

They need to make their superior quality count on Saturday and put in a strong performance that can create momentum ahead of tough clashes with South Africa and Argentina later this month.

Duncan Taylor and Jim Hamilton flew home injured after the U.S. game and have been replaced by Glasgow Warriors duo Peter Horne and Tim Swinson, per Planet Rugby.

Cotter will be looking for signs of improvement against Canada before the real challenges of the Southern Hemisphere behemoths.

With a quality performance in Toronto, they could be inspired to kick on into the rest of the year and be in good shape come the World Cup next summer.
